Poland Skates on Thin Ice

Friends,

Poland needs to choose it's friends very carefully. No country paid as dearly for WWII than Poland. No country was more scarred by the Russians. The Poles are trying to make sure that a resurgent and very rich Russia doesn't once again try make Poland a satellite country.

The U.S. is walking a thin line by signing this agreement. We agreed to defend Poland in case of attack, quicker than NATO could respond. Russia said that this agreement cannot go unpunished. Putin is a thug and we are going to see some tense moments in the world very soon. This is too reminiscent of the cold war only initiating with the "Cuban Missile Crisis". The entire world is in danger. We must be negotiating with Russia.

Rice Signs Missile Deal With Poland New York Times

"WARSAW — Despite fierce opposition from Moscow, the United States and Poland signed a long-stalled agreement on Wednesday to place an American missile defense base on Polish territory."

"The United States and Poland finally reached agreement on the deal last week, after Russia sent forces into Georgia, a move that has alarmed former Soviet satellite states like Poland. The talks between the United States and Poland had been deadlocked for months, but the Russian military intervention in Georgia appears to have given both sides a final push to get the deal done."

"Last week, Russian officials reacted angrily to the announced deal with Poland, saying that the move would worsen relations with the United States. A senior Russian defense official, Col. Gen. Anatoly Nogovitsyn, suggested that Poland was making itself a target by agreeing to host the antimissile system. Such an action “cannot go unpunished,” he said."

"Lena Kolarska-Bobinska, director of the Institute of Public Affairs, a leading independent think tank in Warsaw, said “They feel that Poland is one of their territories and Poland is entering their field,” she said."

"The fears about a resurgent Russia were codified to some degree in what Polish and American officials characterized as unusual aspects of the final deal, including an obligation on the United States to defend Poland in case of an attack with greater speed than required under NATO."
